About us

Presentation and objectives

Our country needs to embark on the path of industrialization to ensure a better future for generations to come. This commitment constitutes a lever for economic and societal development, and must include concepts on renewable energies, water and air quality, green chemistry, food safety, bio-sourced molecules and biofuels, in other words the bio-economy in general; all the while associating public authorities, the scientific community, industrialists and businessmen. Our country is obligated to commit itself to the path of industrialization in order to ensure a better future for future generations. This commitment constitutes a lever for economic and societal development, and must include ideas and strategies on renewable energies, water and air quality, green chemistry, food safety, bio-source molecules and biofuels, in other words the bio-economy in general; involving public authorities, the scientific community, industrialists and businessmen. Following the success of the first edition of the CEGPI'22 congress on energy and industrial process engineering, the research laboratory of Matter’s valorization and recycling for sustainable development VRMDD, is organizing the second edition entitled International Congress on Energy and Industrial Processes Engneering, ICEIPE'24, featuring internationally renowned speakers and presentations on the proposed themes. This is to share the latest results of the research and assessment of emerging technologies with researchers and professionals from all over the world, and to put the products of scientific research at the service of development and the economy .

For its second edition, ICEIPE'24 has the honor of welcoming great personalities from the scientific world:

Pr. GAÏD Abdelkader

Scientist

Doctor of Science, Professor of Process Engineering at the USTHB, Director of the multi-disciplinary "Water Resources-Protection" research unit, he has taken part in a number of environmental missions for ministerial cabinets. In 1994, he joined Veolia, where he was responsible for validating construction projects for water treatment plants, while also participating in technological innovations in this field.
Member of several environmental institutions and organizations. Author of several books, patents and publications on water and the environment.

Pr. Khaled LOUBAR

Associate Professor

Khaled LOUBAR has been an Associate Professor in the Energy Systems and Environment Department of IMT Atlantique (France) since 2009. He obtained his PhD in 2006 at Nantes University. He then held the position of Research Engineer at Veolia Environnement (2006 - 2009). His research focuses on waste-to-energy, alternative fuels, energy storage and decarbonization of energy systems and processes. He has developed expertise in the field of thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, gasification, hydroliquefaction) applied to the production of fuels and chemicals. He is in charge of the innovative PREVER R&D platform. He is a member of several research groups and a reviewer for renowned journals.

Dr. Saddam Musleh Muthana

Director of Accreditation & Quality Assurance

Dr. Saddam Musleh Muthana currently serves as the Director of Accreditation & Quality Assurance at Alfaisal University. He oversees and direct University-wide activities related to accreditation, quality assurance, and faculty development. Dr. Muthana joined Alfaisal University in 2014 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. During his tenure at Alfaisal, he has held multiple leadership positions including Director of Life Sciences program, Chair of Chemistry Department, Vice Dean for Academic & Student Affairs, and Acting Dean for the College of Science & General Studies.

more Dr. Muthana received his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the University of California-Davis, CA, USA in 2009. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from California State University-Fresno, CA, USA in 2003 and 2014, respectively. Prior to joining Alfaisal University in 2014, Dr. Muthana was postdoctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute/ National Institutes of Health (NCI/NIH), MD, USA (2010-2014). He also worked as a Lecture at the University of California-Merced, CA, USA (2009-2010).
Dr. Muthana’s research interests are in the interface of chemistry and biology with focus on studying the roles and applications of carbohydrates, synthesis of advanced materials for targeted applications, sustainable chemistry, biomarker discovery, nanotechnology, and drug delivery. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in a variety of high impact journals, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society, ACS Chemical Biology, and presented his research work at international conferences and meetings. Dr. Muthana has been bestowed with multiple research grants and awards in recognition of his research, teaching, and service including Faculty Award for Research Excellence, Outstanding Teaching Award, and Outstanding Service Award.

Dr. KONSTANTINOS V. PLAKAS

Associate Researcher, Chemical Engineer, PhD

Dr. Konstantinos V. Plakas, Chem. Eng., PhD, is an Associate Researcher at the Natural Resources and Renewable Energies Laboratory (NRRE), one of the founding research units of the Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute (CPERI), Centre for Research and Technology, Hellas (CERTH). In the last 20 years, he has been involved in numerous R&D projects funded by the European Commission, the chemical industry and other national funding agencies, on R&D topics related to drinking and industrial water treatment by membrane processes and advanced oxidation processes.

more His expertise includes recovery of water and materials from wastewater by membrane processes, removal of natural synthetic and organic pollutants, integrated and hybrid membrane processes (i.e. e-Fenton and photo-catalytic membrane reactors), desalination (by membrane based processes, such as reverse osmosis, electrodialysis and capacitive deionization), and valorization of agro-industrial effluents for recycling/reuse of water and recovery of valuable materials. In his research activities, he has published 32 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 5 book chapters, 2 patents, and more than 90 papers in international and national conference/workshop proceedings (h-index=19).

Prof. Dr. OKTAY ŞAHBAZ.

Associate Researcher, PhD

Oktay SAHBAZ has his bachelor's degree from Hacettepe University-Turkiye (2002). He received an MSc and PhD from Dumlupinar University, and he studied at Wroclaw University of Technology-Poland during his PhD. He visited the University of Newcastle-Australia for post-doctorate research in 2016. He was a visiting professor in Kazakhstan in 2022. Dr. Sahbaz is former head of the international relations office of the DPU, and is currently the head of the processing and technology division of the mining engineering department. Dr. Sahbaz has more than 50 international publications, including Jameson flotation cell, flotation of various minerals, and occupational health and safety issues.

more In addition to the above Dr. Sahbaz is one of the section editors in Physicochemical Problems in Mineral Processing Journal. He received one of the Dedeman Mining Company Awards in 2011. Dr. Sahbaz has also been involved in many project management and networking activities regarding international projects and EU funds. He has worked as a project writer and coordinator in 9 different international projects. He has a strong competence to manage tasks efficiently and activities to ensure timely delivery of assignments and maximize resource allocation across virtual and physical teams. He gave many lectures to academicians and researchers within his university and outside of the university in terms of Erasmus+ and related projects. He has competencies for writing and leading international projects and managing financial issues according to European and National Law.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Hoinkis

Associate Researcher, PhD

Pr. Dr. Ing.- Jan Hoinkis conducted a doctorate in thermodynamics at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany (now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). After completion of his thesis he moved to the Swiss company Ciba-Geigy, where he was working as head of a R&D group on process development in the field of fine chemicals production with focus on environmentally friendly technologies. He has been working since 1996 as a professor at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences giving lectures in chemistry, thermodynamics as well as environmental process engineering.

more His R&D work is focused on water treatment and water reuse with special attention on membrane technologies. He was project coordinator of several national and international R&D projects and he is currently coordinating a European research project (FP7). In 2008 he was appointed Scientific Director of the Institute of Applied Research, which is the central research facility at the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences.

Dr. Mattheus (Theo) F. A. Goosen

Associate Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies

Professor Mattheus (Theo) Goosen currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies a position he has held for the past 15 years. He was also the Acting Dean of the College of Science & General Studies from 2017 to 2022. As one of the founding senior faculty he feels extremely proud to be part of this competent, diverse, and internationally renowned institution. Alfaisal University is a fully accredited NCAAA institute of higher education. Furthermore, the Times Higher Education (THE) Young Universities 2022 Rankings placed Alfaisal University 1st in Saudi Arabia, 1st in the Arab Region & 36th Globally.

more The university was also ranked 8th by THE in “The World’s Best Small Universities” (2022) Prior to joining Alfaisal University, Dr Mattheus acquired extensive academic experience working for several prestigious Institutions over a span of more than 24 years. He was the Campus Dean of the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in Amman, Jordan (2006-2008). Before this he worked in Puerto Rico, USA as the Dean of the School of Science and Technology at the Universidad del Turabo (2004-2006). Other Institutes where he has held academic positions were Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat (2003-2004), Oxford University, UK (sabbatical 1990- 91), Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada (1984-1996). Apart from pedagogical job roles, Dr Mattheus has also held various technical positions in respected companies such as Areej Vegetable Oils & Derivatives (Oman), Oman Agricultural Development Company (Oman) & Connaught Laboratories Limited (Canada ON). Dr. Mattheus has been awarded with several accolades and scholarships for his achievements. He was recognized for example in the “Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists List” (Career Impact) in 2022. He still teaches a course on “Environmental Science & Sustainability” to undergraduate students. Additionally, Dr Mattheus has more than 200 publications to his credit including over 150 referred journal papers, 45 conference papers, 12 edited books and 10 patents. He has been involved in major research projects and has helped to raise over $20 million USD for research work at Alfaisal University. His areas of research interests include renewable energy, desalination, sustainable development, membrane separations, biomaterials, and culinary research.

Elena Tocci

Researcher

Elena Tocci is a senior researcher at the Institute on Membrane Technology of the National Research Council of Italy. She obtained her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and New Materials at the Department of Chemical Engineering and New Materials of the University of Calabria (Italy) in 2000.
Adjunct Faculty at the Department of Material Engineering and Convergence Technology, Gyeongsang National University, Jingju, Korea, since 2021. Current President of the European Membrane Society (EMS).

more Her research relates to the simulation and modeling of membranes and membrane operation. She has been involved in membrane science research through research cooperation at European and international levels. She is a member of the editorial board of scientific journals, the organizing committee of international conferences / Co-Chair of conferences, and the chairperson of conferences. She is a reviewer of international ISI journals and co-editor of Special Issues. She made over 130 presentations as an invited and keynote lecturer at national and international conferences, workshops, and congresses. Elena Tocci is a co-author of more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers and chapters in international journals and books.

Dr. Mahdi Bodaghi

Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering

Dr Mahdi Bodaghi is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in the School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University. He is the module leader for the Solid Mechanics and Dynamics, and Medical Applications of Smart Materials UG and PG modules. Mahdi actively pursues research on Smart Materials, Bio-composites, Metamaterials, Robotic Materials, 3D and 4D Printing (Additive Manufacturing) Technologies (h-index: 46, citations: 6566). His vast experience and research on smart materials and additive manufacturing has led him to co-found the 4D Printing Society and to co-edit the book series- Smart Materials in Additive Manufacturing (Vol. 1 & 2) published by Elsevier. His research has also resulted in the publication of over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers in prestigious journals.

more Mahdi received his BSc, MSc and PhD Degrees in Mechanical Engineering in 2007, 2010 and 2015, respectively. For his doctoral research, he developed constitutive models for functional Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and Piezoelectrics and assessed their sensory and actuation performance in controlling shape and vibration of smart wing-like Composite Structures by non-linear Finite Element Analysis. He received the Best Doctoral Thesis Award in 2015. During his PhD training, he also served as a Teaching Assistant and a Lecturer for the modules of Mechanics of Materials (I, II, III), Engineering Plasticity and its Applications, and Manufacturing Processes and Technologies.
From July 2015 to July 2018, he was working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Smart Materials and Structures Laboratory at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He worked with Prof. Wei-Hsin Liao to develop advanced multi-functional shape-memory structures fabricated by 3D and 4D Printing Technologies for Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Applications. Since October 2018, Mahdi has been with the Department of Engineering at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). He received Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from NTU in November 2020. Mahdi has been ranked amongst top 2% of the most influential researchers in 2020-2023 in the world by Elsevier and Stanford University. He has served as Chairman and member of Scientific Committees for 15 International Conferences, as Guest Editor for 10 Journals, as Editorial Board Member for 10 scientific Journals, and as Reviewer for over 150 Journals. Mahdi’s research awards include the Best Doctoral Thesis Award of 2015, 2016 CUHK Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Annual Best Paper Award in Mechanics and Material Systems presented by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2017, 2018 Horizon Fellowship Awardee, 2021 IJPEM-GT Contribution Award recognized by the Korea Society for Precision Engineering, and Global Talent endorsed by the Royal Academy of Engineering, in the UK.

Dr.V.C.Padmanaban,

Assistant Professor in Bioengineering

Dr V C Padmanaban, Bio.Tech., PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Bioengineering at the National Institute of Technology Agartala, India, leading the WATER Research Group. This group focuses on developing processes for treating industrial effluents from lab to industrial scale and producing value-added products from agro-industrial waste moving towards a circular economy. The research expertise of the group is in the Design of Experiments (DoE) for various bio and environmental processes. His research focus areas are bioprocessing of industrial enzymes and products, wastewater surveillance for antimicrobial-resistant entities, remediation of emerging micropollutants by microbial and Advanced Oxidation / Reduction Processes - A(O/R)Ps and environmental toxicity. His group works with national and international partners from various institutes and research centres on water pollution-related issues and resource management. Over the last 13 years, he has been involved in numerous R&D projects funded by various funding agencies. He is a member of several associations, and societies focusing on Water based research.
